Genre(s): Women’s fiction

Book Synopsis:

Abigail Preston can’t understand why she isn’t happy. She’s married to Kevin, a successful salesman whose generous salary allows her to be a stay-at-home mum to their four-year-old daughter. She tries her hardest to give her husband the perfect home – but she just can’t seem to get things right. She meets divorced dad Henry at soft play one Saturday morning, and their developing friendship gives Abi the confidence to see her marriage in a different light. But when Kevin finds out about her friendship with Henry, Abi’s life is changed forever.

Review:

Disclaimer: This isn’t my usual reading genre, but that’s a big part of the reason I joined the book club last year. It gets me reading things I wouldn’t normally pick up.

This book was pretty well written and had a solid story. It took me up to the halfway mark before I really started to connect with either main character. I liked Henry; he’s a nice guy, someone who values people for who they are, positive, and genuinely caring.

Abi I struggled a bit with. I’ve watched enough true crime to know she fit the description of someone suffering from spousal abuse to a T. Even though Kevin’s variety of abuse is mostly emotional, the damage she suffers is pretty evident from the start. She has no self-confidence, berates herself, and lives in constant fear of displeasing her husband. She also fears leaving him and won’t even entertain that notion until things come to a breaking point.

As someone who hasn’t personally been through anything like that, it was hard to relate to her decisions sometimes. I wanted her to get away from Kevin so badly. He was terrible. He deserved to be alone. But as I said above, I’ve watched plenty of true crime documentaries, and the fact that she didn’t leave is a classic symptom. It was frustrating and heartbreaking to read her story.

But in the end, I enjoyed the story. As frustrating and heartbreaking as it was, it had a happy ending.
