Character Relationships in The Caein Legacy

Character Relationships in The Caein Legacy

Continuing with the theme of romance and relationships from last week’s blog, this week I’m focusing on my other epic fantasy series, The Caein Legacy.

I’ve mentioned this series from time to time on this blog, and occasionally on social media, but I haven’t gone into great detail about it yet. With my decision to publish it beginning in 2023, it’s fitting to start releasing some information now. So, onto the characters who have significant others in their lives!

Andrew and Vera

Alright, so at the very beginning of the first book, it’s Andrew and Claire – but she puts an end to that pretty quickly. I won’t go into the why or how, as it spoils some major plot lines. Andrew is the main character through the series; he’s a career soldier with ties to the royal household with a dangerous secret. He’s what is referred to as a skin-changer—half human, half dragon, with the ability to shift between either form. Under the laws of Novania, dragons (or dragon-kind, in his case) are to be put to death, or may be hunted for sport. Naturally, he keeps his heritage to himself and only assumes his human guise.

Vera is a noblewoman, the widow of a minor lord, who has known Andrew for most of her life. After his split with Claire, Andrew’s brother arranges for Vera to be seated next to him at a celebratory feast in the castle. There are immediate sparks, and the two eventually marry. They have a happy enough relationship, but in classic me fashion, things happen and…well, let’s just say it doesn’t last. You’ll have to read Exile once it’s released to learn more.

Colin and Claire

Yes, it’s the same Claire that I mentioned above. Claire is ambitious and will do nearly anything to become queen, hence her hookup with Colin, who is heir to the throne. After securing her position as Colin’s betrothed, she goes out of her way to humiliate Andrew at every turn. To say she’s vindictive is an understatement.

Colin is not the benevolent ruler the kingdom would like to see on the throne. He’s cold, merciless, and will do anything to secure his power. Colin also goes out of his way to goad Andrew about his rapid change in fortune. Their pairing is naturally volatile and does not bode well for the future of Novania.

Alexander and ???

Alexander is Andrew’s younger half-brother, who harbors a secret of his own. He bears the Mark of the Magi, which is punishable by death under Novanian laws. Andrew is the only person who knows of his Mark, and Alexander does his best to hide it from the world. Even though Alexander is a prince, the kingdom’s laws would be upheld if it was discovered. In spite of this, Alexander is a constant source of optimism.

During his journey in the second book of the series, Guardian, Alexander meets someone who changes the course of his life forever. Since the events happen in book two, I won’t go into details about who he meets or how they encounter one another. Theirs is a relationship that becomes stronger throughout the series, and I can tell you they’ll have a happily ever after.

And to add a bit more on Andrew… He does eventually recover from the events of Exile and moves on with his life. And he does find lasting love in the end. But again, in classic me fashion, he goes through a fair amount of hell first.

I’ll be posting more about The Caein Legacy in the coming months, so watch for it here!
