Book Review: Bits & Pieces by Dawn Hosmer

Genre(s): Thriller, suspense

Content warning: Bits & Pieces contains some disturbing scenes depicting abuse, assault, rape, and emotional trauma.

Tessa is blessed—or cursed—with flashes of insight she obtains from others. She has no control over her ability, and not all of her experiences are pleasant. Each flash comes to her in the form of a color; blue for good memories, red for pain, yellow for events that have not yet come to pass, purple for skills. Because of her unusual condition, Tessa rarely makes contact with others and fears the repercussions involved if she were to become close to someone.

A chance encounter with a serial killer leaves Tessa on the brink of madness as the flash she received from him begins to consume her. Her only hope of regaining herself is to see the homicide cases solved, though she doesn’t know where to begin… Or who can be fully trusted.

Bits & Pieces was a thrill ride from start to finish. Intense, gripping, and disturbing, it’s definitely not for everyone – but if you’re a fan of psychological thrillers or suspense novels, I’d highly recommend this book. It reminded me of early Dean Koontz or John Saul books, which I’ve always loved. While I won’t go into detail about the end of the book (you know, spoilers), I will say this: keep your tissues handy—you’ll need them.

Bits & Pieces is the first book in the series. I’ll be adding book two to my reading list for later this year.
