Book Review: Kiss Me Deadly by Jessie Thomas
Genre(s): Paranormal fantasy, Urban fantasy
Content warning: There are a number of violent/fight scenes in this book and some adult language.
Seraphina is the only practicing necromancer in a city plagued by vampires and ghosts that refuse to depart to the afterlife on their own, and her nights are very busy. Seraphina is usually called upon to deal with ghosts and poltergeists and does her best to keep a safe distance from the vampires. Even though there are laws in place to curb their bloodthirsty habits, they are still a threat—and some choose not to follow those rules. So when a vampire seeks her out for help in locating his son, she’s immediately skeptical of his motives.
As the main character, Seraphina is strong and witty. I loved her narration throughout the story and the snarky sense of humor she had. As a necromancer, I liked that she wasn’t the stereotypical variety and was (other than her ability) a normal human being.
There was plenty of action in this book, and while there was a bit of romance at the end, it wasn’t the overarching theme (which as a reader, I prefer). The action sequences were designed well. While the plot was fairly predictable, I still found it to be a fun and engaging story. I’d definitely recommend this to fans of paranormal/urban fantasy.
