Genre(s): Science fiction, suspense

The Cracked Reflection is a prequel to Refraction, a book I reviewed several months ago. You can read my review of Refraction here.

Maria Braighton is a girl with an imaginary friend – who might not be so imaginary. Her friend has a tendency to be cruel to her, has hurt others, but no one can see him but Maria.

The Cracked Reflection is the story of Maria’s struggle to cope with both life and her personal tormentor as she grows up. By the end of the story, Maria is determined to learn the cause of her trouble, and resolves to do whatever is necessary to fix it. Though it doesn’t go into the why or how of her “imaginary” friend (that is explained in Refraction), it fills in some of the gaps that I’d wondered about while reading the novel.

This was a quick read, but one that I found very enjoyable. If you’ve read or are planning to read Refraction, The Cracked Reflection is a must.

While I enjoyed both books, I actually liked The Cracked Reflection more. Maybe it was that element of the unknown that was a constant in the story, or maybe it was just the story itself that was a bit more appealing to me. Regardless, I loved this book.
