Book Review: The Darkest Memories by Alyse N. Steves

Genre(s): Superhero Fantasy / Thriller

Book Synopsis:

My name is Hadley Gordon. Parahuman mutations: telekinesis and telepathy. Employment: Agency for Parahuman Affairs. Age: twenty-six, not that I remember the first twenty-one.

We’ll get back to that.

I thought digging through criminals’ minds for a living was hard enough, but then a serial killer came for my friends.
The good news? I saw him. I fought him. I survived.

The bad news? He got away.

Oh, and remember that memory loss thing?

Now, my missing memories stand between us and a killer, and he’s determined to finish what he started.

Review:

I love crime thrillers, and when an author throws superheroes into the mix too, it’s impossible not to want to read their book. And this one did not disappoint.

Hadley isn’t your typical superhero either. The telekinesis and telepathy are both very useful (and dangerous) abilities, but she never wanted to be working in the field. She’s usually sitting behind the glass in the observation room, learning what she can of suspects and safely out of danger.

The memory issue she suffers from isn’t only a problem at her job, but with life in general. She loses her phone and keys multiple times, loses track of what happened through any given day, and sometimes can’t remember where she lives or who people in her life are. It was frustrating for her, but heartbreaking at times as a reader. So yes, Hadley is a very unlikely superhero, but I loved her character more because of it.

Once Hadley decided to commit herself to the case and fight for her friends and fellow agents, the book was almost impossible to put down. Intense doesn’t begin to describe it, and the pace doesn’t slow down even through the final chapter.

This was a fantastic book, and one I’d recommend to anyone who likes thrillers or superheroes.
