Character Relationships in Hunted and The Mage War Chronicles
Continuing with my February theme, this is the last post I have revolving around character relationships. I’m lumping Hunted and The Mage War Chronicles together because Hunted is a standalone, and The Mage War Chronicles is still in-progress (I have the first 2 books written, but nothing more yet.)
Chandra and Ke’tai from Hunted
Chandra is the main character in the novel, and at the onset, she’s still trying to find her place in the world. She’s in her final year of college and unsure what career path she’ll pursue—until she meets the summoners. At that moment, she knows her path, but is forced to keep most of it secret from her sister and friends.
Ke’tai is one of the summoners she meets early on. He’s something of a scientist, but has also practiced martial arts for decades. He was brought in to assist with Chandra’s training so she could learn self-defense. There are almost immediate sparks between the two.
I went into the writing of Hunted knowing very well that certain events needed to happen in order to progress the book into part three. Because of this, I intentionally drew on my own experiences with falling in love and tried to make Ke’tai the best partner Chandra could ever hope for. I was seeking a visceral reaction from readers during part two—and I think I achieved that based on reader feedback. If you want to know the details, you’ll have to read the book.
Note: I will never forget the reaction I received from one of my best friends when she was first reading Hunted. I got a text message one morning that said, “I can’t believe you did this to me!” I knew exactly what she was talking about…
Tynan and Dantellion from The Triad Murders (book one in The Mage War Chronicles)
This is a definite bromance.
Tynan and Dan (as he is usually referred to) have been friends and gambling partners for years before the book begins. Tynan is a mage with the ability to know when someone speaks the truth or lies—which is the reason he winds up assisting the Citadel guard with the murder investigations. Dan is sent to the Citadel to investigate one of the murders on behalf of the dragon clans (he’s a half-dragon skin-changer who can appear human, much like Andrew Caein from The Caein Legacy).
There are some spoilery circumstances that crop up through the book that test both the bonds of their friendship and their loyalty to one another. In the end, they both realize they can count on the other no matter what.
Helene and Errol from Oracle (book two in The Mage War Chronicles)
Helene is a mage with the ability to see other people’s memories—some of which haven’t yet come to pass. As such, she’s named “Oracle” by those who believe in her gift. Errol is the captain of a mercenary band her brother hires to protect her. There is a bit of an age difference between the two, but over time, they learn they enjoy one another’s company – despite her brother’s obvious disapproval. (As an aside, her brother isn’t a likeable sort and he doesn’t approve of anyone.) Errol’s a good guy, in spite of his rough exterior.
I think the best “kiss scene” I’ve written to date is found in Oracle. I don’t have release plans yet for this series, but it will come out after The Caein Legacy (which I’m hoping to start releasing in 2023).
