How Serpentus fits into The Relics of War series
I want to start out by saying that Serpentus is a standalone novel, but it’s related to The Relics of War series.
Serpentus starts at the onset of an event that occurs in chapter 40 of The Moon’s Eye. You know, right about the time stuff really starts to get interesting.
The main character in Serpentus is Owen Greenwaters (I wrote a bit about him in last week’s blog. You can read it here: Introducing Owen Greenwaters.) He was sent to Stone Hill to help the city prepare for an attack, but at the start of Serpentus, he doesn’t know exactly who or what will be attacking. The first chapter is titled Myths and Monsters—which may tell you a little about what he’s facing.

The rest of the storyline follows a string of events that were only hinted at in the main series. Readers will get to see more of the Murkor in Serpentus, along with a bit more of what goes on in the black tower, and another side of the war’s aftermath.
While readers got to see Dranamir’s perspective of what she did in War of the Nameless (specifically chapter 15), they’ll get to see that same scene play out from the victim’s perspective in Serpentus.
Now, I went into writing this book knowing exactly what the story would entail and how difficult it was going to be for me to write certain parts. Not only did I write it anyway, I decided the story worked best from a first-person perspective. That means I was forced to get into the headspace of the main character while he endured trauma after trauma.
Serpentus is, without a doubt, the most difficult book I’ve written to date. It was emotionally draining in parts, but I wouldn’t change the outcome for the world. I love the final product, and I hope you will too.
Serpentus will release on February 27, 2024 and is currently available for preorder in many locations. You can learn more about it here: SERPENTUS
