The Caein Legacy: The Main Cast

The Caein Legacy: The Main Cast

As The Caein Legacy nears publication, I’ve decided it’s to revisit some of the character profiles I released previously on this blog. Most were done well over a year ago, long before I had an official release date for book one. (And yes, I do have a release date – I’ll be sharing it on Saturday with my newsletter.)

The Caein Legacy is told from Andrew’s perspective, but is ultimately a story about siblings and learning to accept oneself. Andrew has three younger half-brothers, and they’re all featured at some point throughout the series. Some are more likeable than others…

I don’t have artwork for all of the characters, but maybe one day I’ll commission some more. (Or maybe some amazing fan will send me some. It hasn’t happened yet, but I can dream, right?)

So without further delay, here is the main cast of The Caein Legacy:

Andrew Caein

As I mentioned above, Andrew is the main character and the narrator of every book. He’s the eldest of his siblings, the son of the Novanian queen and a dragon-mage. He’s referred to as a skin-changer, though he knows very little about his dragon half at the start of the series.

Circumstances in Novania make it unsafe to reveal his nature, but he’s obligated to remain after making a promise to his mother. He’s vowed to protect Alexander, who has his own dangerous secret.

Andrew is featured on the book covers (in both his forms).

Colin Marsden

Colin is the oldest of the Marsden princes, and half-brother to Andrew. Colin spent the entirety of his life believe he was merely the second son of the king, and often antagonized Andrew for his role as presumed heir. But Andrew isn’t the king’s son, and when matters of succession are made known, Colin flaunts his newfound authority.

He’s the main villain of the series, and has a penchant for taking sibling rivalries too far.

Claire Ellington

Claire’s part in the series is sometimes complicated. She was married to Andrew when she believed he’d one day be named heir to the throne, but sought an annulment once she learned the truth. She’s driven by power at the outset, and will stop at nothing to become queen.

Alexander Marsden

Though he’s another of the Marsden princes, Alexander harbors a deadly secret. He was born with the Mark of the Magi, an offense that should have seen him executed at birth. Protected by the queen, and later by Andrew, Alexander has grown up to become a skilled swordsman.

He remains in Novania, despite it’s dangers, because it’s home. But after Colin is named heir, he knows it’s only a matter of time before he’ll be forced to flee.

Thomas Marsden

Thomas is the youngest of the Marsden princes, and has little interaction with Andrew until book 3 (Harbinger), where he takes a prominent role.

Thomas is a trained scribe, loves history, and will devour almost any book in his path. As the youngest of the princes, it was never in his future to lead.

Emmarie

Emmarie is Merael, a peaceful, forest-dwelling people Andrew first encounters in book one (Exile). She is a Wild-kin, gifted with the ability to communicate with animals. While her role is minor in book one, she is a fixture throughout book two (Guardian).

The Oracle

The Oracle is the leader of the magi in the Southlands, gifted with the ability to see a person’s memories. A side-effect of her gift is that she often sees memories that have not yet come to pass – future events that may or may not be certain.

Andrew and Alexander have an uneasy relationship with her, one that is often fraught with frustration and mistrust.

Rynn Gwyllias

Rynn doesn’t arrive in the series until midway through book two, but she rapidly becomes a constant in the lives of Andrew and Alexander, and later Thomas.

Rynn is a powerful frost mage, but her magic has come with a cost. Her body has become so cold, she can’t make physical contact with others unless they’re willing to risk frostbite. Her life was lonely prior to the brothers’ arrival at the Frostwake, where she worked.

But when she learns what Andrew is, her life is forever changed.
