Book Review: The Fires of Treason by Michele Quirke

Genre(s): Historical fiction/fantasy

Gregory and Elizabeth are royalty, the children of a cruel and abusive king. Gregory is heir to the throne, and unlike his father, he is kind and merciful, traits the king sees as weakness. When ordered to brutally end an uprising, Gregory opts to execute only the rebellion’s leaders rather than the thousands of others who participated. The king is furious when he learns the news and strips his son of his title while branding him a traitor to the crown. Gregory is sent into exile.

His younger sister, Elizabeth, remains at the castle, though she disagrees with the king’s decision. When her father later changes his mind about Gregory’s exile and demands he be executed if found, she flees in order to warn her brother and save his life.

The Fires of Treason is set in the fictional kingdom of Caracalla, but it does have many elements that make it seem as though it is set in our world. The author did a wonderful job of including little details that describe the time period, which made the story feel very authentic. The plot was engaging, which made for an enjoyable and quick read. I’ll be watching for book two.

The Fires of Treason is book one in a series. Book two, Embers of Fate, is currently in the works.
