Book Review: The Marked Princess by E.P. Stavs

Genre(s): Fantasy, young adult

Josselyn is the crown princess of Eldor, and it’s expected that she choose a husband on her eighteenth birthday. There are several suitors, but one is Prince Stefan from a neighboring kingdom, a man she immediately dislikes and distrusts. When she chooses a knight and childhood friend instead, Stefan won’t take no for an answer. He attacks, and Josselyn is forced to run for her life… But she has a few surprises of her own in store for Stefan as she works to reclaim her kingdom.

The Marked Princess has plenty of action and an interesting story that kept me engaged throughout. There’s a touch of romance and a happy for now ending, but it’s clear the story is far from over by the end of book one. It’s a quick, easy read with several unique elements.

Josselyn’s character was by far the most developed of those with point of view sections. Some of the others were interesting, but they didn’t feel quite as “real” as Josselyn. I would have loved to see the same attention paid to Alex’s character, but that might just be me.

I wish there was a bit more development in the final few chapters, as they seemed a little rushed compared to the rest of the book. I also found the progression of the story to be a bit on the predictable side, but it was done quite well and made for an enjoyable read.

All in all, a fun book! For those looking for an interesting fantasy with a younger-YA feel, I’d recommend The Marked Princess.
