An update and things coming in April

Things have been, for the most part, pretty good for me since the first of the year. I believe my last writing update post was around the end of December, so I feel like it’s time for another one.

I have a number of projects in the works that I’m excited for.

First, I have a story publishing soon as part of an anthology. I can’t share all the details yet, as the marketing campaign won’t start for a couple more weeks, but I can tell you this much: The anthology will release in May and I’ve had the opportunity to read through all of the stories (not just my own.) I think it’s going to be a fantastic collection.

The theme for the stories is “belonging,” and all of the authors involved are women or nonbinary. The story I submitted is titled Tiiv kaadan, and is related to my novel Wraith and the Revolution. The short story is told from Daaros’ perspective (rather than Kye’s, who features in the novel), and was a really fun project for me. I’m excited for this anthology, and I can’t wait to share more details here. That will come in late April.

The second major project I’ve been working on is the revision of The Mage War Chronicles series. This is going to take me a good chunk of time to complete, as I have 7 books written and another couple planned. I’ve rewritten the first book and am currently in the process of rewriting the second. Both were written a number of years ago, and stylistically, didn’t match the later books (which were written more recently.) The overall plot hasn’t changed for either; this is just a style update for consistency’s sake, which has made the rewriting process go a lot faster than it would otherwise.

The last item is The Fontayne Company duology. I’m not actively working on this right now, but book 1 is with my editor and is in the process of getting cover artwork. I’m still planning on a 2027 release for it, but I haven’t nailed down a date just yet. Book 2 is with my beta team for feedback. I’m planning to release it 6 months after the first book.

I’m also really excited about the duology. This is my cozy fantasy ghost hunters series, and it features an interesting array of characters: Zel, the team’s paranormal expert and a real-life elven ghost; Tagrin, the dragon inventor who supplies the team’s tech; Mel, a necromancer and the team’s leader; and Syvlanus, a history professor with an interest in arcane lore…who also happens to be half-vampire. The story was the result of some very random conversations I had with my husband around Halloween a few years ago, but it was so much fun to write.

Things happening in April:

Wraith and the Revolution ebooks will be on sale April 11 – 13 for $0.99 on all platforms.

Fort Collins Book Fest logo

The Fort Collins Book Fest is running April 11 and April 18 at the Foothills Mall. I’ll be there both Saturdays! The book fest is running in conjunction with the Fort Collins Winter Farmers’ Market.

I’m also going to be on Jason Shannon’s podcast. We’ll be recording mid-April, with the podcast release date sometime in May. I’ll share more info on when it will be available for listening once I have it.

I have more live events in the works, but most are in the “pending approval” stage. As things are definitively scheduled, I share them here on my blog. They’ll also be listed on the home page of my website.

Survivor A Wraith and the Revolution Prequel Story by A.J. Calvin

And lastly, I’ve decided to offer my short story, Survivor, on retailers. It will still be free to download by signing up to my monthly newsletter, but after some consideration (and much convincing by others), I’ll be putting it up for sale. Watch for an announcement about Survivor sometime in April.
