Genre(s): Fantasy

Son of a Liche is book two in The Dark Profit Saga. I read and reviewed book 1 previously. You can read my thoughts about it here: Orconomics by J. Zachary Pike

One year after the events in Orconomics, Gorm Ingerson and his party of former heroes find themselves caught up in the schemes of the liche, Detarr Ur’Mayan, a second time. Detarr has raised an army of undead with plans of world domination…or world conversion. Amid the crisis, the Hero’s Guild has sent assassins after Gorm and company, offering a large bounty for their capture or death.

There was much more going on in this book than the first one, but it was just as funny in parts. I particularly liked the Head of Marketing for the undead horde, who was literally a floating skull, and the fact that he was using flyers to convert people to their cause by promoting the “benefits” of becoming undead.

And what’s better than a battle of epic proportions as the climax of a good fantasy book? With an army of undead threatening the world, there had to be one—and it was a fun one to read. Most of the main characters were featured at some point during the battle, but I think my favorite part was Jynn’s. (I won’t got into details due to spoilers, but his part in the battle was worth waiting for).

As far as sequels go, this was a good one.

But… The story isn’t over yet. There are still some parts that were left unresolved, and a promise at the end of the book that a third is in the works, titled Dragonfired. I couldn’t find any information on potential release dates, but I’ll be watching for it.
