Book Review: The Awakening of Marcianna by Isabelle Markus

Genre(s): Speculative Fiction / Urban Fantasy

Content warning: There are a few scenes depicting violence and/or abduction.

Marcianna Caruso’s life is busy; she’s a pediatrician, has a family and three kids, and still makes time for her two closest friends. But when strange and inexplicable things begin to happen to her that seem supernatural, she’s not sure how to explain it. And to make matters even more complicated, a handsome and creepy man seems to be following her. She believes he’s connected to the weird phenomena somehow, but until she confronts him, she doesn’t know for sure.

This was a very interesting coming to power story, in that the main character is middle-aged and has built a family prior to gaining her abilities. And because of that, the decision she’s forced to make near the end of the book is all the more heartbreaking. I’ve rarely read a book of this nature featuring a middle-aged protagonist, and it was a fantastic departure from the mainstream. I really liked this aspect.

It was also very refreshing to see a husband-wife team with a healthy relationship depicted (I’m so tired of the trend of spouses always fighting in books/media—this was a welcome change.)

It was a well-written narrative, and a quick read, one with a nice blend of intrigue, family/friend relationships, and the supernatural.

I’ll be adding the second book to my list once it’s released.
