Book Review: The Heartbeat of a Million Dreams by Halo Scot

Genre(s): Science fiction, science fantasy

Content warning: There are some scenes of violence/gore.

Slade Hawk is hunted for what she is, what she represents, but she isn’t sure what that is. Forced to live on the streets and run for her life at every turn, hers is a desperate existence.

Koa is the leader of the rebellion, a group dedicated to freeing the starchildren of Mars from Earth’s tyranny. Her group needs Slade, but Koa is hesitant; Slade’s life has been a trial from the start, and she doesn’t want to make it any worse.

I’ll be honest: as soon as I heard this book was available, I had to pick it up. I loved Halo Scot’s Rift Cycle, so reading this novella was a given. The writing in this piece, as with her other books, is stellar. (If you’d like to see my review of The Rift Cycle series, it was part of my May 2021 book review post.)

This is a story that is full of both action and emotion. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and force you to keep reading until the pages are no more. The conflict and world-building were incredible. And I have to say, it’s always nice to find a happy ending after a couple characters go through absolute hell. This was one phenomenal story.

I recommend this book for fans of science fiction and fantasy.
