Enter the “Wraith-verse”

I was recently talking books with one of my author friends, and she coined a term that I hadn’t considered myself until then.

She knows that I have several short stories publishing this year all related to my novel, Wraith and the Revolution, and since that book is a standalone, there’s no series title to go along with it. Coming up with something that references both the book and its related stories was never something I considered, but it makes sense.

And so, the Wraith-verse was born.

I like the term, and I’ll continue using it. The novel and the 3 stories related to it aren’t the last I’ll be writing from that universe. (Yes, I have plans to expand on it, but I’m not ready to share what those are yet. Sorry—you’ll have to wait.)

So where to begin with the Wraith-verse?

Honestly, wherever you like. While there is a chronology to the stories I’ve written to date, they’re all standalones. You can read any of the short stories without reading the novel, or read the novel without bothering with the shorts, or just read everything (because that will make this author very happy.)

For those who like to have an order, however, here’s how the stories fall into place based on chronology:

Timewise, Survivor is first. It’s a 4-chapter story set seven years ahead of the novel. Kye is still the main character, and I’ll admit, it was fun to return to him at an earlier point in his life. Pablo, Kelsey, and Tariq also appear in Survivor. The story revolves around Kye’s admission exams into the Olympos Mons Military Academy, one of his attempts to get off his home world.

Second comes the novel, Wraith and the Revolution.

Third—or kind of at the same time as Wraith—is Tiiv Kaadan. This story features Daaros as the main character and covers his first meeting with Pablo. (There’s also a brief cameo by Araan for the fans of Daaros’ personal assistant.) I say this falls kind of at the same time as Wraith because this particular scene would have happened somewhere around chapter 7 in Wraith. Readers only hear about the date afterward, when Pablo tells Kye and asks him to join him at Daaros’ party a couple days later.

Tiiv Kaadan is my story contribution to the upcoming anthology, Together is a Distant Star (it’s available May 19!)

Last is Not All Books Are Worth Reading. Once again, Kye’s the main character here, but this story is set about six years after the conclusion of Wraith. You’ll get to see Daaros, Pablo, and Vee too. Not All Books Are Worth Reading is about a potential contagion landing on Botanaar, and as a cyborg, Kye’s better equipped to deal with the problem than most.

Not All Books Are Worth Reading was my contribution to The Book of Spores anthology, which I believe will be commercially available sometime in the fall (I don’t have those details yet, but I’ll share them once I do.) For now, The Book of Spores is available through its Kickstarter Late Backer store.

So that’s the Wraith-verse…for now. More will (hopefully) be available one day.
