Meet Kye, Pablo, and Kelsey from Wraith and the Revolution

I shared these characters with my newsletter previously, but now it’s time to share them with the world via my blog.

Kye is the main character and narrator of Wraith and the Revolution, Pablo is his best friend, and Kelsey is his older sister. I have 4 more characters from this series that I plan to profile in a similar manner (with artwork too.) I’ll post about the rest later this year, probably in May for this blog (though they’ll be shared with my newsletter sooner.)

Anyway, here are the first 3 characters from Wraith and the Revolution. Artwork by JustMiss Art.

Kye Verex

Kye ekes out a living on his toxic home world as a scavenger. His prospects for a long life are nil; those born on the decimated planet he’s from and exposed to its unique combination of radioactive waste, noxious fumes, and poisoned atmosphere usually don’t live past the age of 35 unless they scrounge enough credits to get off world.

Kye is 26, and he has exhausted all hope of escaping. He has sickle cell trait (as does his author), which is an automatic disqualifier for space travel. It can be cured through gene therapy, but the treatment is prohibitively expensive. At the beginning of this story, Kye has given up all hope of leaving his home world behind and has accepted the fact that he’ll die within the decade.

Though he has given up, his older sister has not… And she has a plan to get him off world.

The catch? He has to give up a portion of his humanity and sign a lifelong contract with a powerful and notorious megacorp to obtain his cure. But becoming a cyborg soldier could be fun, right?

Pablo Noriega

Pablo is Kye’s best friend and a fellow scavenger. Unlike Kye, he has the means to escape their home world if the opportunity arises.

Pablo is also a talented engineer. At the beginning of the story, he’s offered a position in a graduate program at the Megatropolis Solar Tech Institute (or MSTI), one of the galaxy’s top engineering schools. But Pablo almost refuses the offer—he doesn’t want to leave Kye behind.

After some discussion, Kye convinces him to seize the opportunity and resigns himself to a life alone on the noxious world they call home. Pablo is both elated and terrified by the prospect of leaving, but to make a name for himself as a solar engineer, MSTI is his golden opportunity.

Kelsey Verex

Kelsey is career military, and Kye’s older sister by 9 years. Her acceptance into the Olympus Mons Military Academy (OMMA) was her ticket off their home world. She saw plenty of action in her early years with the military, quelling riots and subduing insurrections. She is now retired from active duty, but maintains her rank as an instructor at OMMA.

She has worked tirelessly throughout the years to find the means or the connections necessary to see Kye freed of their toxic home, but most of her efforts failed. It’s only when the Zylar Inc Elite Guard (or ZIEG) begins looking for new recruits that she’s able to wrangle a deal—but if her brother accepts, he’ll be conscripted to work for Zylar Inc, the galaxy’s most influential and notorious corporation, for the rest of his life.

But Kye will live if he accepts—and survives the training. Kelsey is desperate to save him. It’s simply a matter of convincing her brother to accept Zylar Inc’s terms…
