The State of My Writing (an Update)

It’s been a while since I made my last writing update post. I don’t actually know when the last one was, but I’m pretty sure it was before Wraith and the Revolution was published in June.

Which means I’m probably overdue. By a lot.

Yep, the last general update on the state of my writing was all the way back in March. So it’s definitely time.

What I’ve been working on so far this year:

I started the year off with a short story, Tiiv Kadaan, which will be part of a future anthology. I can’t say anything more about that project at this time, but I can share what the story itself is about. It’s a cozy piece and captures the scene where Daaros and Pablo (from Wraith) first meet. Daaros is the POV, which was fun. I like writing from non-human perspectives.

I spent the bulk of the year writing Into the Beyond, book 2 in The Fontayne Company duology. I loved working on this project. The main character, Zeldyvian (or Zel), begins the first book as a ghost, trapped at the site of his death, and inexplicably immune to the Rite of Departure, which is necessary in his world to send a spirit into the afterlife. He encounters a necromancer who wants to recruit him for a paranormal investigation team, because they’re in need of a “paranormal expert,” and who better to recruit than a ghost? I’m planning to market it as a fantasy rom-com, because that’s what it turned into.

I wrote the first book (Rites of Departure) in early 2024, and it has been through a couple revisions and more beta readers than my usual crew (because of the romance element.) I’ll be revising it at least once more before I publish, which means it’ll probably be available sometime in 2027. Now that the 2nd book is finished, I can officially start making some of those publication plans.

After finishing Into the Beyond, I dusted off a short story I wrote in late 2023 that will be going out to my newsletter starting in November. It needed a few minor edits, but I’m pretty happy with the end result. This story, Survivor, is a prequel to Wraith and the Revolution told from Kye’s perspective. It goes through one of his many attempts to leave Earth prior to what he eventually agrees to do in the novel.

Survivor is split into 4 chapters, and I’m planning to share chapter 1 in November’s newsletter, with subsequent chapters following each month through February.

And now, I’m working on an as-yet untitled book project (or it might be a novella, I don’t know yet.) It has a cozy feel, but it’s kind of tied to The Caein Legacy series. It’s set a couple decades after Legend, and so far, there have been a few familiar faces returning to the page. The main character of this story is Victor, a 23-year old artist seeking to uncover the truth about his parents. He knows his mother, but never met his father, and based on the secrecy around that subject, he knows nothing about the man. I’ll leave it at that for now, since the identity of the other characters involved will give too much away. I’m pretty sure this will be another standalone.

What’s Publishing Next?

Well… This is a tricky question. The next book to publish will be Rites of Departure in 2027, but that doesn’t mean 2026 won’t have something.
